Sometimes in the middle of an ice freeze I still feel like a good smoothie (exhibit A) and if you don’t already know that I am a fan of banana-less smoothies then you do now, especially if they are filled with blood oranges and raspberries.
Can we all agree that blood oranges are the best of all of the oranges? They are definitely the sassiest – bold, vibrant, a little bit sour and only show up for the mid-winter party. Which means that we all need to take full advantage of them when they are around for just a short glimmer of a season. You can start by making this smoothie because the colour alone will put you in a good mood.
The secret ingredient in this recipe is cauliflower. I encourage you all to jump on the cauliflower in smoothies bandwagon. It adds some body without adding any sweetness and most fruit perfectly overpowers the taste. I find the secret to using cauliflower in your smoothie is steaming it first so it is easier to digest and then freezing it on a sheet pan. This avoids the cauliflower being frozen into one giant piece of ice.
Hibiscus combines beautifully into this smoothie and adds tartness and dose of vitamin C. My favourite hibiscus powder is this one from Harmonic Arts and if you are in the States you can try this one from Starwest Botanicals. It is not mandatory though, so if you can’t find hibiscus powder just leave it out!
